| Almost Famous The DJ Project "Almost Famous," The DJ Project's 10th CD compilation, marks an important evolution in our program format. We slowed things down a bit, so our participants truly understand hip-hop's cultural traditions before recording any music. With these students, we took it back to hip-hop's roots, focusing primarily on the lost art of rocking a show. Participants also learned about the importance of "sampling" to hip-hop history, as they took a field-trip to the Salvation Army where they were given $5 and the task of buying interesting-looking records that they would later "sample" from while creating their own compositions, In an abbreviated 10-week program cycle, these talented and dedicated youngsters wrapped their minds around themes of war, violence, love and the streets. They capped their experience within our program with a mind-blowing performance that had 100 guests waving their hands, jumping up and down, and heeding their commands as true MC's. |
