Impacts & Outcomes
 Audio Production / Media Messaging

The Media Messaging / Audio Production classes are designed to explore and conduct critical analysis of how media messaging (music, advertising, videos, social media, etc.) influences youth perceptions, attitudes, and behavior towards alcohol and drugs. As one of Horizons’ CMCA Youth Action Groups, youth are trained in environmental prevention principles and strategies and explore a variety of systems such as family, cultural and community norms, access, perceptions and behaviors that shape the way that youth respond to underage and binge drinking.

  DJing

The DJ Project’s one-of-a-kind DJing classes harness the hip-hop culture and use it as a medium through which youth validate their own existence and express themselves. Under the guidance of a world-renown DJ and scratch guru, youth participate in a variety of cutting-edge and industry specific skill building trainings such as scratching, digital DJing, and live performances, while also engaging in lessons in professionalism, project management, artist development, and collaboration. Our youth have gone on to become high-profile DJs in the industry while contributing to a cultural movement that promotes inclusion and attachment.

  Event Production
  Event Production

The Event Production Crew is a dynamic group of young people who design and produce Hip Hop community events that empower their neighborhood. Both a stipend based program as well as one that accepts work placement from Agency Employment programs, it is blended with the EP Events/Campaigns program where youth workers are responsible for the execution of The DJ Project’s event production, business management, and marketing activities. Youth learn a host of industry specific skills such as event conceptualization and development, vendor and artist relations, outreach and promotion, grant writing, etc. Each cycle, the youth crew applies for youth philanthropy grants and uses the funds awarded towards the production of an even bigger and better event.
